Tonight was probably the best episode of Raw all year. They had one major theme, and they built upon it, all while keeping the in-ring action solid all night. There’s been a major swing recently from the Sports Entertainment side of things to a more in-ring based product. It may be short term, but it’s certainly refreshing. HBK vs Cena last week, Edge vs Orton this week, they’ve been putting on consistent matches lately.
As for Khali, yeah, of course he’s not the ideal challenger. It’s different, at least. It’ll probably be Khali vs Cena at Judgment Day, and then some combination of HBK/Orton/Edge. Would it have been nice to have Kennedy come win the belt tonight? Sure. But it would have been counterproductive, because say what you want, but the man’s not ready JUST yet. It would have been like Austin winning the WWF Title immediately after King of the Ring. Kennedy’s going to be a HUGE star this time next year. He just needs a little more time.
BTW, interesting developments in the Hardyz/Cade and Murdoch angle. It’s obviously going to end with a rematch, but it’s a different approach, at least.
Here’s hoping tommorrow night on ECW begins the official McMahon vs ECW Originals feud leading to an ECW Title match at One Night Stand with McMahon vs one of the four originals. I think they’ll have to do that now instead of the rumored CorVon vs Lashley match with the injury to Bobby.
This is the one legacy of the Attitude era I wish we never had; Vince McMahon in a constant series of “the big bad boss vs. (insert name of generic wrestler here)” storylines. I’ve lost count of the number of these feuds we’ve had to endure since Stone Cold first beat him up. I used to enjoy the Mr McMahon character but now it just generates a level of X-Pac heat antipathy in me. The only upside is that usually, at the end of the feud, Vince gets the shit beaten out of him by (insert name of generic wrestler here) just to show the locker room that even the boss will take one for the sake of entertainment.
My fantasy booking for this current run of Vince as uber-heel would be to have Abdullah the Butcher turn up and challenge Vince to a match for the ECW title.
Sorry, rant over…
Also meant to say that I guess the positive of this current storyline is that we do get Shane O-Mac on our screens which is never a bad thing.
If for no other reason than that the first 5 seconds of Shane’s music beats everybody else’s music hands down.
Raw was great last night. Except for the RAW serial killer/days of our lives angle.
Turns out Bobby Lashley is okay and won’t be missing any time.
I think we’re all missing one huge thing about RAW last night that pretty much ruined for me…
The Great Khali.
The WORST in ring performer ever, possibly…destroying your entire main event roster. I don’t care how big he is. The guy is fucking HORRENDOUS.
I don’t know how you couldn’t have been left with a bad taste in your mouth after that ending.
He’s no worse than Andre was(when i saw him at least) so i write him off as just a new Andre the Giant. A big guy that the fans buy as a threat.
I don’t like comparing any of these new “big” guys to Andre because there’s one HUGE key difference and that is the perception of the fans. People overlooked the fact that Andre wasn’t that entertaining in the ring (at least by the time Wrestlemania 3 rolled around) because they believed that wrestling was real! It didn’t matter if he lacked the talent to put on a heated match because people believed that he really was beating the hell out of Hogan and others.
The difference these days? EVERYONE knows that wrestling is predetermined. I think that’s why it takes something extra to get the fans’ attention. Since it’s predetermined then what happens bell to bell needs to be somewhat entertaining and Khali has yet to prove the ability to impress anyone with anything other than his size. Being huge just doesn’t cut it anymore; Khali is *NOT* Andre the Giant and this is *NOT* our father’s wrestling fan.
Well said, Lennon.
Another thing we have to consider here is that the current 4 way feud was still really working. There’s no need to plug this worthless piece of shit Khali in there. NOTHING good will come of this. I was actually enjoying Cena matches for the past few months because he’s had someone in there with him to make him look good. The Khali/Cena match (please let there only be one) will be terrible.
And the Andre that a lot of people saw (Wrestlemania 3 and beyond) was really a sad version of Andre. He could barely move. He only came back for that feud because Vince saw such huge numbers and he paid Andre the biggest paycheck for one show to date for coming back to wrestle Hogan. He couldn’t pass up the money. That’s also why he stuck around after that for a while.
And this isn’t the 80’s anymore. People are not impressed just because someone is huge. It’s like the slam dunk contest. If someone does a foul line dunk, it’s not as impressive as it was when Jordan did it in the 80’s. Everything changes. People expect more. The bar gets raised.
